Billecart Salmon Extra Brut NV

The low-down: Tis the evening of Jon Bon Jovi in Abu Dhabi - and what better reason to celebrate pre-drinks with a bottle of Billecart Salmon. We're big fans of blanc de blanc (100% chardonnay) Champagne (including Billecart Salmon's Blanc de Blanc Grand Cru). Tonight however, is an extra brut - which should offer the typical dryness of a blanc de blanc without the fruit. Extra brut means no sugar is added before bottling.

Billecart-Salmon is one of the leading houses of Champagne, family run for the last two hundred years with 100 ha under vine. Their blend is 40% Pinot Meunier, 35% Pinot Noir with 25% Chardonnay.

A few other champagnes we've opened recently:

We picked this up from Le Clos at Dubai airport for 50 Euros.

The take: Clear golden yellow color. Light bubble. The nose is vanilla ice cream and grapefruit. The attack is dry. Very dry. Little finish. Sour with little fruit. With time, butter and hazelnut.

In closing: Dry as a bone!

Rating: 7.5 out of 10.
