The low-down: This 14ha chateau has been in family (Pourquet-Becot) hands since the 1980s when it was acquired from the merchant Barton & Guestier. As is typical for St Emilion, the majority of their 35 year old vines are merlot with cabernet franc and cabernet sauvignon as well. 2006 was a solid vintage from which they produced just over 4,000 cases.
The Becot family also own the neighbouring property Chateau Beau-Sejour-Becot, as well as La Gomerie in St Emilion and Joanin Becot in nearby Cotes de Castilion. It's not a coincidence that the last few Bordeaux we have tasted are owned by large conglomerates (Lurton, the Dourthe Group or Bernard Magrez) and reflects the commercialization and consolidation of the Bordeaux wine industry.
We picked this up four years ago retailing for 25 Euros in France.
Compare this to our reviews of other St Emilion including:
- 1991 Grand Cru Classe: Chateau Trimoulet
- 2004 Grand Cru Classe: Couvent des Jacobins
- 2006 Grand Cru Classe: Chateau Fombrauge
- 2006: Chevaliers de Lanezac.
- 2007 Grand Cru Classe: Chateau Corbin
The take: Solid red appearance with hints of purple. The finish is quite oily, with plenty of runny legs. The nose is blackcurrant, with chalk, salt and tomato. The attack is sour, fleshy, with little fruit. A dry, earthy, bitter, salty palate with notes of menthol, mushrooms and spice..
In closing: No shrinking violet. A product of the earth.
Rating: 7.5 out of 10.
