The low-down: We're big fans of blanc des blancs (100% chardonnay) champagne for its flavour! Pierre Peters is another grower-producer we love whose champagne is renowned for its quality and good value. The majority of their chardonnay grapes are from Mesnil-sur-Oger that we're told produce the greatest finesse and purity of any chardonnay in Champagne! That's a mouthful! The blend uses 40% reserve wine. The dosage is between six and seven grams per liter in line with the R Pouillon Cuvee de Reserve we opened earlier this year. There's a great 10 minute video on Champagne here (which features Rudolph of the Peters family first up): vimeo.com/112035827. We picked this up from Le Clos at Dubai airport for 38 Euros.
The take: Initially very bubbly, with a light, transparent, lime color. On the nose, very buttery, rich with smells of the sea. On the attack, nutty, initially with no fruit. Some structure, a little sour, earthy. With time, dry, almost savoury, minerally, and oh so buttery! Naturally it becomes sweeter with time, with a slight bitter caffeine bite.
In closing: Buttery, rich, dry, sublime!
Rating: 9 out of 10.
