The low-down: Yodel-ey! Back from our little Austrian alpine holiday, where in the summer heat we sampled a 2004 Pfaffl chardonnay, a 2002 Hitzberger Setzberg riesling and a 2003 Hirsch Gaisberg riesling. In the air conditioned comfort of our home we've opened a couple more Austrian reds from Triebaumer: a 1998 Cabernet and a 2007 Tridendron.
Johanneshof Reinish are another stand-out Austrian wine-maker: fourth generations of the same family making wines in South East Austria, with now 40 ha under vine. Like Triebaumer and unlike most Austrian wine-makers, 75% of their production is red wine.
We picked this up retailing from Doeller in Golling, Austria for 42 Euros. This pinot noir is a Grand ReserveL only produced in outstanding vintages.
The take: A brilliant, dark-red color. The nose is initially humid, with limestone, the sea and smoke. The attack is smooth, dark, earthy with coffee and spice. With time a bit more fulsome and savoury on the palate, hints of xmas pudding, chalk, cherry, offset by bitter cocoa! Yum. A little too alcoholic for my drinking partner though ... I think he prefers delicate bourgognes!
In closing: Sublime! Has character!
Rating: 9 out of 10.
