The low-down: Paitin is an Italian wine-maker based in Piemonte. This 1998 rosso is from Langhe DOC, but they also own vineyards in Barbera d'Alba and Barbaresco. A few months ago we opened a Domenico Clerico 2003 Langhe.
This small 17ha estate (~8,000 bottles p.a.) has been within the Pasquero family's hands since 1796. Langhe DOC typically blends the varietals nebbiolo (a la Barolo fame) and barbera.
We picked this up retailing from Doeller in Golling, Austria for 36 Euros.
The take: Looking in the glass is like into a dark red abyss! So opaque. The nose is initially sharp with hints of coffee, chalk and fruit. The attack is thick and juicy, and a little alcoholic. The wine settles into a fruity, earthy, spicy combo - a product of nature. No tannins. Rich, forward, noble, smooth, delicious a hint of peanut too.
In closing: A dark red abyss of deliciousness!
Rating: 8.5 out of 10.
