The low-down: We're in Sydney for a week or so and have somehow gotten our hands on a few choice wine treasures! We kick-start the series with a 1994 shiraz from Bannockburn, 20km out of Geelong.
Bannockburn, run by the Hooper family, was established in 1974 and currently has 27 ha under vine. They experienced such demand for their wines that they decided to bottle-age a portion of their production and release it ten years later as a "Museum Release", of which this is an example.
Interestingly this set us back only $45 ... probably because it's perceived to be past its peak ... let's see.
The take: Dark orange/brown/red appearance. The nose is initially potent: fruit preserve and a curious barnyard/dairy/salty, fermented cheese nose that is very interesting! Never noted this before in a wine. The attack is lively with acidity. The fruit takes a little time to emerge. Good tannins, earthly, chalky, notes of cherry. By the end the palate revelas citrus and candied fruits.
In closing: Elegant, subtle with a very interesting angle. Plenty of life, definitely not past its peak.
Rating: 8.5 out of 10.
