The low-down: Oh yes we did:
- Buy a wine produced by Anglina Jolie, Brad Pitt and the Rhone-based Perrin family (of Chateau Beaucastel fame)
- Spend a whopping 34 Euros for a Provence rose - ridiculous we know!
- Check that the bottle wasn't counterfeit
Why? Because we're curious of course!
Miraval is a 500 ha under vine, Cotes De Provence estate located in Correns. The joint venture's inaugural 2013 vintage apparently sold out in hours. The grapes grown on the vineyard are organic, but Miraval blends with non-estate, and therefore not necessarily organic, grapes.
This is a blend of cinsault, grenache, syrah, rolle. The first three are typical for the region for a rose, however the fourth, rolle, is usually used in Provence white wines - e.g. a 2005 and a 2011 Chateau Bellet Baron G we opened last year.
There are plenty of decent Cote de Provence roses (we've a special spot for them in our heart) we've opened recently including:
- Val d'Iris 2013 for 8 Euros
- Excellence des Marquets 2013 for 5 Euros
- Seigneur de Piegros 2013 Chateau de L'Aumerade for 12 Euros
- Domaine Tempier 2011 (Bandol) for 20 Euros
- Domaine La Suffrene 2013 (Bandol) Cuvee Lea for 15 Euros
In addition to the rose they are currently making two blanc (AOC Côtes de Provence and AOC Côteaux Varois en Provence) and one rouge (Vin de France).
The take: A very light, copper. Legs as long as Ms Jolie's! The creamy nose is actually similar to a white wine, is it the rolle? The aromas are primarily citrus fruit (grapefruit) but not very strong or distinct. The attack is smooth and sweet. High sugar count with little fruit makes it taste a bit artificial and sherbety (like the Lanson rose champagne from last month). The finish leaves a thick, oily coat on the mouth - curious. Hints of malt and honeycomb are balanced by bitterness and nutty flavours.
In closing: Atypical, sugary, bitter.
Rating: 6.5 out of 10.
