The low-down: Chateau Lamothe-Bergeron, with 67 ha under vine is a small Haut Medoc vigneron owned by Cognac H. Mounier & Cognac Hardy. The domaine retains till today the Cru Bourgeois status. 2009 was the first vintage under new wine-maker Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, the owner of Chateau Angelus is St Emilion.

Château Lamothe-Bergeron owes part of its name and its reputation to agronomist and politician Jacques de Bergeron. With the French Revolution he was sent to the Haut Medoc in 1796. Jacques de Bergeron published a method of grafting vines that was to give rise to the “Bergeron” method, still used by Rhone Valley wine growers in the early 20th century.

We picked this little number retailing in the UK at a very reasonable GBP 23.5. With six years under its belt, we feel it should be peaking about now. The blend is merlot (58%) with cabernet sauvignon (38%) and a touch of cabernet franc (2%) and petit verdot (2%).

The take: Dark purple, transparent. On the nose, rose, chalky and honey. A smooth attack. Tannic. Plenty of flavour to savour: blackcurrant, bay leaf, grape bubble gum, honey, coffee, cocoa, cinnamon. More vibrant, heavier and tannic than the 1999 Fugue de Nenin Pomerol we opened the same night.

In closing: Plenty of flavour to savour!

Rating: 8 out of 10.
