The low-down: We've opened up a couple of chardonnays over the last year (Bernard Chassagne-Montrachet 2006 and a Domaine du Chateau de Meursault 2007) but this is our first chardonnay from outside Burgundy.

This 90% chardonnay blend (with 10% grechetto) is one of the jewels in the Antinori range. These grapes are grown in Umbria (interestingly the region is an IGT and not the more famed DOC or DOCG).

The Antinori family have been making wine since 1385. And more so have been pushing the blending of Bordeaux grapes with traditional Sangiovese since the 1920s: they produce two of the famous Super Tuscans: Tiganello (a 20% Bordeaux blend) and Solaia (80%). We recently opened their Brunello di Montalcino (a 2001 Pian delle Vigne).

We picked this up from Le Clos recently (for about 30 Euros) after trying it from their enomatic machine - they also were showcasing this at Taste of Dubai recently.

The take: A light, pale golden appearance. Highly transparent. A thin rim, with no legs. On the nose, citrus fruits, sweet honeycomb, vanilla and butter. A powerful, rich, oaky attack underlined by a syrupy consistency. Smooth, caramel, hazelnut, effervescent but with an oaky bite that doesn't fall away.

In closing: Solid oak chardonnay!

Rating: 7.5 out of 10.
