The low-down: We're unashamed fans of Bourgogne pinot noir - at both ends of the price spectrum: we've enjoyed recently a 2008 Gevrey Chambertin and a 2003 Morey St Denis as well as the more modest 2011 Charlopin Bourgogne. This aged Maume fits squarely in the first category!
The Maume family hold their core plots in Gevrey Chambertin and produce wine under the Domaine Maume label. Under the Maison Maume label the grapes have been sourced from independent growers in NSG.
NSGs, especially those produced by old school vignerons, demand patience - to allow that sturdy, tannic structure to un-wind. The peak opening window is sometime between 10 to 15 years. We couldn't wait any longer though!
The take: An auburn appearance, semi-dark, semi-transparent. On the nose, cherry and forest floor. On the attack, richy, syrupy, jammy. Nice long finish. Relatively neutral, closed with a hint of spice and cinnamon.
In closing: A solid wine with a rich texture.
Rating: 8 out of 10.
