The low-down: M. Chapoutier is one of the giants of Cote du Rhone. His group has large holdings across both north and south Cote du Rhone. Jemma Goodship at Le Clos, who we interviewed last year, is a big fan of M. Chapoutier and particular his Crozes Ermitage blend (not to be confused with this Crozes Hermitage blend).

At 15 Euros, this little number is one his best value buys: it is a 100% syrah blend from his 25 year+ old vines in Crozes Hermitage. Commendation on the Braille label too Mr Chapoutier!

The take: On appearance, a highly transparent, dark purple-red with very slow legs. A full, savoury nose - humidity, earth and chalk. With time the nose becomes even more intricate - fish, cherry, oak. On the attack, full but subtle. Good acidity. Nice effervescent texture with hints of blackberry and spice.

In closing: Subtle and composed.

Rating: 8 out of 10.
