The low-down: We visited this small, rustic Provence producer in December of last year. They are named after the iris plantations that were grown in the area for perfume. Their cellar door is a bit difficult to find, located near the village of Seillans. The proprietor Anne Dor used to be a vet and acquired the 8 ha plot in 1999.
Unlike the Val D'Iris Grand Foudre we tasted last year, this is granted Cotes de Provence status by virtue of its syrah (70%) led blend. At the cellar door this blend, named after one of Anne's children, will set you back 11 Euros.
The take: On appearance, very dark, purpley red. On the nose, strong, sour, jammy, herbaceous and very gamey. Hints of coffee and bluberries. Polished. On the attack, rich, fleshy, thick, intially very animalistic. Settles with time becoming smooth, sweet, and with bluberries.
In closing: Initially gamey, then smooth and sweet.
Rating: 7 out of 10.
