The low-down: Morey St Denis is a small village in the Cote de Nuits, Burgundy that produces elegant and complex pinot noir. Their wines are a good value alternative to the commune's more famous neighbours Gevrey Chambertin (click here for a Mortet 2008 we had recently) and Chambolle Musigny.
There are 4 grand cru (40 ha under vine) and 20 premier cru (33 ha) domaines including Clos des Ormes (3 ha). Like most Burgundian communes the name is a combination of the village "Morey" and its most famous chateau "St Denis."
The Ligniers are a famous Morey St Denis family that produce under three separate brands.
Being a 10+ years Premier Cru we're expecting a subtle and settled wine with secondary and tertiary notes.
The take: On appearance, a very light auburn - it shows its age. Viscosity is low. On the nose, sour fruits initially, followed by blueberries and raisins. With time brine and pepper. A smooth attack, raisins. Very subtle, pleasant, a hint of spice - xmas pudding. The jammy spice is a nice match to the duck we're having. Overall however, a little overripe and plain for us - it could be its age.
In closing: Silky smooth, pleasant, a little overripe though.
Rating: 8 out of 10.
