The low-down: Chateau Cambon La Pelouse is a small domaine located outside the town of Macau in Haut Medoc, on the border with Margaux. The chateau has 38 ha under vine and has some illustrious neighbours including Chateau Cantamerle and Chateau Giscours from Margaux. The vineyard has been run since 1996 by the Marie family: Annick, Jean-Pierre Marie and their son Nicolas.
We picked this little number retailing in France at a very reasonable E15. With seven years under its belt, we feel it should be peaking about now. The blend is merlot (60%) with cabernet sauvignon (35%) and a touch of cabernet franc.
Fun fact: At the end of the 17th century when sent to England, the estate's wines commanded a price of 400 French livres for a 900-litre barrel.
The take: On appearance, a very dark brown-red with a lighter, orange edge. Low transparency, viscous. On the nose, perfumed with sour red fruits including cherry, strawberries and orange, balanced by aromas of game, mushrooms and chalk. On the attack strong, austere, spicy, acidic with hints of tobacco, bay leaf and pepper
In closing: Strong, austere, spicy - like your grandfather's old tobacco pipe.
Rating: 7 out of 10 although my drinking partners A and P feel it deserves 8.
