Review: R Pouillon NV Cuvee de Reserve

The low-down: Champagne needs no introduction! This number is a blend of 70% pinot noir, 15% pinot meunier and 15% chardonnay with grapes sourced from Ecueil, Epernay, Festigny and Mareuil. The dosage is seven grams per liter.

The vigneron R Pouillon began by selling grapes from their parcel of land in Mutigny to negociants. They made the switch from grape grower to developing their own wine in 1947. Over the years the family has expanded its land to currently 6.5 ha under vine across seven villages around Epernay. The estate is now run by the fourth generation of the family.

The family practice what is called “culture raisonnée", an approach close to organic farming that eschews the use of chemical fertilizers, defoliants, and fungicides. Grass is allowed to grow between grape rows and the earth is turned periodically in order to encourage bacterial proliferation and diversity, which is eventually reflected in the expression of terroir in their champagne.

We picked this up from Le Clos at Dubai airport for 33 Euros.

The take: Initially very fizzy, lemony yellow, transparent and viscous. On the nose, orange and peach, with structure, hints of game and sea food. On the attack, creamy, buttery, a little oily with good acidity. The initial burst of effervescence settles quickly, revealing notes of fruits and nuts.

In closing: An interesting, varied, balanced, creamy delight. My drinking partner A feels it a little too strong and sweet.

Rating: 8 out of 10.
