Review: Dezzani 2006 Barolo Piemonte

The low-down: Barolo, the venerable king of Italian wine, needs no introduction. The blend is 100% nebbiolo, which means the little foggy one and is named after the fog that covers the hills of Barolo. The wine is produced to be long ageing - by regulation its wines have to be aged two years in oak barrels and one year in the bottle before release. Pundits claim 2006 a marquee year with adjectives like big, powerful and dense. Dezzani is a big Piemonte producer with a large stable of wines.
We tried the Dezzani along with three other Barolos at a UTC blind tasting event.
For Dubai residents, Le Clos offers a range of Barolo including a couple of 2006s.
The take: On appearance, quite transparent, purple-red and leggy. On the nose, the rose perfume of Barolo is unmistakable! On the attack, reserved at first: a velvety finish with light acidity. In addition, hints of pepper, sour citrus and chocolate which evolve into raisins. Good balance.
In closing: Reserved, balanced, classic Barolo and most importantly ready to drink.
Rating: 7.5 out of 10. Incidentally, the Dezzani tied for first place in our blind tasting.
