Review: Cave d'Augustin Florent 2012 Gigondas

The low-down: Gigondas, a commune in south Cote du Rhone, is known as the little brother of Chateauneuf du Pape and more reasonably priced. As the blend is majority grenache it is not recommended for extended ageing (>10-15 years).
Here at Vinterest we "keep it real" by not discriminating against any wines - this one is actually produced by Carrefour - where we picked it up for less than 10 euros.
The take: On appearance, purple-red, transparent, relatively dark but with the thickest, slowest legs we've seen in a while! On the nose, a distinct aroma of toffee at the beginning, which evolves into cocoa and burnt caramel. On the attack, the acidity underlies a lushness not balanced by any tannins. Like the Vacqueyras cocoa dominates, however with a strong, peppery bite. This is one of the first reds we have opened in a while that, notwithstanding its youth, we didn't need to decant.
In closing: A cocoa delight optimized for immediate pleasurable consumption.
Rating: 7 out of 10.
