The low-down: "Vignerons de Caractere" is a rather grand sounding name of a wine collective of 80 families from a village in south Cote du Rhone, Vacqueyras, with its own AOC. The GSM (grenache, syrah, mourvedre) blend is typical for the region, but with the cinsault grape added into the mix.
We picked up this entry level Cote du Rhone for less than 10 euros in France.
The take: On appearance, cherry red, transparent, relatively dark with thick but runny legs. On the nose, cherry, red fruit underlied by a gamey structure. On the attack, fleshy, soft and velvety. Delightful hints of chocolate, coffee, apricot and blackcurrant jam with a peppery bite to finish.
In closing: A cocoa delight with a soft, velvety texture and a peppery bite. However, it lacks the subtlety of a more compex wine.
Rating: 7.5 out of 10.
