The low-down: Chateau Corbin is a small grand cru classe from St Emilion with 13 ha under vine. The blend is 80% merlot with 20% cabernet franc. The producer Annabelle Cruise-Bardinet clarifies that the cabernet franc adds complexity and a boost to the fruit and freshness of the merlot. Thankfully, the alcoholic content is restrained at 13.0% vs. other St Emilion blends at 14.0%+.
We ended up opening this at the beginning of its recommended ageing but could've kept it in the cellar for another 5-10 years. However my wine fridge is already full!
For Dubai residents, you can pick up a bottle at Dubai Duty Free ... but it's not cheap.
The take: On appearance, a purpley red, very dark and fully opaque. Quite leggy for 13.0%. On the nose, it clearly needs time. Chalk, sour blackcurrant and some gameyness. On the attack, very fleshy, tannic, savory with no fruit With time, coffee, herbs (easy to distinguish cab franc when it isn't fruit forward), with an oily texture. Restrained, not very open - expected for a young wine even with a good decant.
In closing: We clearly had opened this one too early. Would've loved to see how this wine matures in 5-10 years. Nevertheless, intriguingly savoury and gamey.
Rating: 8 out of 10.
